Why don’t you customize the exterior of your phone too?

It’s easy to personalize your phone with a new wallpaper, but what about the out from your phone? It’s the part that others see, so why not give it the same personal touch? There are many ways to do this.

Personalize your phone

As personal as smartphones have become, it’s rare that I see someone with a truly unique device. It’s common to see laptops and water bottles covered in stickers, but then a boring black phone in a plain case next to it. Why don’t we pay the same attention to those devices that are always with us?

Let’s dive into some of the options you have to customize the exterior of your phone.

Stickers

Let’s start simple. As you can see on my laptop in the photo at the top of this page, I love stickers. I see people putting stickers on lots of different things, but not so much on phones. I do not know why. Stickers are great for phones.

Maybe you don’t want to put stickers directly on your device. It’s cool, I understand, but you don’t have to do it like that. I recommend getting some sort of case – a clear plastic case if you want the color of your phone to show through.

Now you can stick as many stickers as you want on the case and it can be easily removed. In fact, you can even get a few cases and customize them a little differently and then rotate them. It’s a simple and inexpensive way to add a personal touch to your phone.

Cases and skins

Okay, this one probably seems obvious, but wait. Many people already use cases on their phones, maybe even the majority of people. How many of those cases are basic black, white, or clear, though?

At the very least, you should use a case that reflects your favorite color (add some stickers and now you’re talking). However, a solid color case only scratches the surface. There are many different designs and models to choose from for many phones. You just have to watch.

If you are not a case, you can achieve the same with skins. A “skin” is basically a sticker that covers your entire phone. They come in a variety of solid colors, textures, and patterns. It’s a great way to customize without adding the extra bulk of a case.

Here’s where you can get really crazy. There are a few services that will allow you to create completely custom skins and cases. You can choose from a library of colors, images, and patterns, or upload your own.

SkinIt is perhaps the best known of these services, offering cases and skins. Somewhere you might not think to look is Etsy. There are a surprising number of stores that print custom cases for you. This is where I picked up my pizza case and the Talkboy case shown in the photo above.

If you want to get really creative, painting is always an option. Maybe you have a very specific color you want to match. Common thought would be to paint the outside of a case, but it works much better to paint the inside of a clear case. This is what I did with the box in the photo above.

The moral of the story here is that you don’t have to settle for the colors and patterns the accessory makers choose. You can get just about anything you want if you put in a little work.

Don’t be afraid to change it

I think most people who use a case on their phone usually only have one case. I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with that – I usually use a single case too. However, why not treat your case like your shoes or watch strap?

Make an appointment for a fancy dinner? Time for a leather case. Are you going camping? Take extra protection. Watching a sporting event with your friends? Show team spirit. Your phone is essentially an accessory, so why not treat it as such?

Look, I’m not gonna punch anyone for not caring so much about how their phone looks. You do you. I just think we should have a little more fun with the gadget that we carry with us almost 24/7.
