The limited edition PinePhone “BraveHeat” Linux smartphone launched last November as promised for $ 149.99. As the code name implied, this was for enthusiasts, as the phones that were part of this product bundle could have flaws and come without an operating system, meaning users had to flash the firmware. themselves.
But now there is a new edition, namely PinePhone “Community Edition: UBports” pre-loaded with UBports with Ubuntu Touch with Lomiri UI.
The specs are exactly the same with an Allwinner A64 quad-core Cortex-A53 processor, 2 GB of RAM, 16 GB of eMMC flash memory, a 5.95-inch display with a resolution of 1440 × 720 and 4G LTE cellular connectivity.
The only difference is that Ubuntu Touch is preloaded on the device, and the back of the phone should have a marking that says you’ve purchased the UBports edition. What should be noted is that it is still not considered a consumer device because UBports is still in beta, and the phone is primarily aimed at members of the UBports community who can provide feedback to UBports developers.
Specifically, while the Ubuntu Touch image will be functional with support for outgoing and incoming voice calls, SMS and LTE, GPS tracking, and GPU hardware acceleration, some features including support for the camera and the USB host, require more work, and the battery life still needs to be optimized. You will find a complete list of what works and what does not on Gitlab.
There is also the same warning regarding the LCD screen as with the BraveHeart edition:
- Small numbers (1-3) of stuck or dead pixels are a feature of LCD screens. These are normal and should not be considered a fault.
- When executing the purchase, please keep in mind that we are offering the PinePhone at this price as a community service to the PINE64, Linux and BSD communities. If you believe that a minor dissatisfaction, such as a dead pixel, will cause you to file a PayPal dispute, please do not purchase the PinePhone. Thank you.
If you want to go ahead, you can pre-order PinePhone Community Edition: UBports from the Pine64 store for $ 149.99 plus shipping. The expedition is expected to take place at the end of May 2020.
