If you’re in the market looking for a new phone and the iPhone is too big for you, here’s something totally worth the $ 150 price tag.
The PinePhone “Community Edition” is a customized version of the PinePhone Linux phone that comes with Ubuntu Touch pre-installed, so you can now enjoy a full Linux package – the original version of the device that came without an operating system.
“The PinePhone UBports Community Edition is the culmination of all of our work over the past 18 months, since the first staggered Unity8 [now Lomiri] demos on the ‘Anakin’ development unit, to modem fights on the “Don’t be Evil” prototype (it turns out that the SIM slot was not wired correctly), to our work to make ‘Braveheart’ units suitable for use by early adopters and enthusiasts, ”says the official announcement.
In addition to Ubuntu Touch, the new version of the PinePhone also includes a new motherboard revision and a custom backplate with the Ubports name and logo.
Device already available for pre-order
But what is more important is that despite the arrival of Ubuntu Touch, the operating system itself is not really ready to become your daily driver and replace the smartphone you use to take photos and all.
This is because some features are not yet ready and further optimizations are needed regarding camera support, battery life, and USB support. But basic features like calling and messaging will still be there, the development team promises.
The 5.95-inch phone powered by a quad-core Allwinner A64 system-on-chip is expected to start shipping in late May. The device also has 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, and a 5MP main camera on the rear paired with a 2MP unit on the front for selfies and video calls.
